This Song's About Beer ---------------------------- It's a simple 4/4 four on the floor A collection of notes yeah you've heard it before 'Cause it's all been said and more One way or another I could get so intense Bono would get jealous I could take it so deep and philosophical fellas Would wake from their sleep But why should I bother This song's about beer every variety A little libation to light up society Beer yeah that's what I said It's tan and full bodied And goes to my head Well I lost my job you hurt me so bad And I sink like a slob and I slowly go mad I would drink my destiny If I could think how to do it There is so much at stake a chef couldn't serve up Today I'm so glad I finally got the nerve up To tell you I love you Screw it This song's about beer every variety A liquid libation of great notoriety Beer will always be true This song's about beer And it's not about you The bitter tears are on tap A face you opted to slap The day you offered a toast You said you loved me the most And I said The most...compared to who? It's a simple 4/4 four on the floor A collection of notes yeah you've heard it before 'Cause it's all been said and mo-oh-oh-whore This song's about beer a reason to sing But self-medication don't conquer anything Beer my jailer and friend From humble beginning to stumble The end © 2017 Ira Merrill Music, BMI

How I Make You ------------------- Can't you say you can stay for a while Can't you see how you make me How I make you Can't you sigh a little softer Will you play dumb if I get too smart Will you please just open up your How I make you Will you give up the laughter Closer than it seems Far as it feels Higher than some high thing Deeper than we thought Hotter than that Bluer than either one Do you know what I can't explain Do you think I am like me How I'm like you Will you get what you're after If you go hope you say goodbye If you do you know you'll make me How I make you If you like I can leave her Closer than it seems Far as it feels Higher than some high thing Deeper than we thought Hotter than that Bluer than either one © 2019 Ira Merrill Music, BMI and Chad Hanson

about

These songs are outtakes or "b-sides" from my 2017 album "Crushing On What Might Be".

I had originally intended to include them on the COWMB album, but they just didn't fit the overall vibe, so I'm putting them together into a two-song collection called "Crush Companion".

"This Song's About Beer" is a tongue-in-cheek sketch wherein a fellow ruminates over all the deep, important things he could write a song about, but in the end decides...beer. Yep. Oh, and there's some silliness thrown in there about getting over a relationship. Because of course there is.

"How I Make You" is a songwriting collaboration between myself and my friend Chad Hanson (chadhanson.bandcamp.com). The challenge we gave ourselves was to write a song which lyrically sounded poetic, but was barely about anything tangible...just contained lots of adjectives and descriptions while eluding what the noun actually is. I think we accomplished it mostly, save for one nod to the song's character being a cheating bastard ("If you like I can leave her"). In general, though, the song turned out how we wanted it: a nice, big shrug. To wit, here are the chorus lyrics:

"Closer than it seems
Far as it feels
Higher than some high thing
Deeper than we thought
Hotter than that
Bluer than either one"
